About BYD

BYD was founded in Shenzhen in 1995 by Wang Chuanfu as a manufacturer of rechargeable batteries for mobile phones and electronics. It moved into car making in 2003 by acquiring a small Chinese manufacturer, and its battery expertise became a key advantage as the market shifted towards electrification. The initials are said to stand for 'Build Your Dreams'.

BYD stopped building pure petrol and diesel cars in 2022 and now concentrates on battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, becoming one of the largest producers of electrified cars in the world. It makes many of its own batteries, including its Blade battery. BYD launched in the UK in 2023, and its range has expanded quickly to include the Dolphin Surf, Dolphin, Atto 2, Atto 3, Seal and Sealion 7, as well as DM-i plug-in hybrids such as the Seal U. BYD has quickly become one of the most talked-about newcomers in the UK, with a dealer network that continues to expand.

BYD on a car subscription

BYD is a relatively new name in the UK, so a subscription is a sensible way to try one of its cars before buying. Its electric models give access to EV ownership with low Benefit-in-Kind tax for company car users, while the DM-i plug-in hybrids suit drivers who cannot always charge. Check the real-world range against your journeys, the availability of charging, the mileage allowance and how servicing and repairs are handled through the provider.
