Car subscriptions in Norway
One monthly payment. No long tie-ins. An independent, editorial guide to car subscription and flexible lease providers in Norway.
Norway is the world's most electrified car market, with nearly all new cars sold now fully electric, and that shapes its subscription scene.
Monthly car subscriptions (bilabonnement) took off here early, helped by high purchase taxes on combustion cars, fast-moving EV technology and buyers wary of being stuck with an outdated battery. The Norwegian Consumer Council has even compared providers, finding big differences in mileage, excess and flexibility.
Today the main options are electric-focused subscription specialists such as imove, Toyota's KINTO Flex, and monthly rental from Avis and Sixt. Prices depend heavily on the car, the binding period and the mileage band. Most plans include insurance, servicing and the twice-yearly tyre change, while tolls, ferries and charging remain your own cost.
Norway
With Norway's fleet shifting fast to electric, a subscription lets you drive a current EV without worrying about battery ageing or resale value.
Studded or non-studded winter tyres are essential across much of Norway; most subscriptions cover the seasonal change and tyre hotel.
Subscriptions avoid the down payment typical of car loans, and providers handle registration and annual road-use fees.
The periodic roadworthiness test (EU-kontroll) and servicing are the provider's responsibility during the subscription.
Comprehensive (kasko) insurance is usually included, sparing you separate quotes and bonus-ladder considerations.
Short binding periods and the option to swap cars suit families, newcomers and people waiting for a new car.

Guide
You pick a car online, choose a binding period (often one, six or twelve months) and a monthly mileage band, and pass a credit check, usually with BankID. You need a valid driving licence; some providers set the minimum age at 23–25 for certain cars. Deposits are rare among subscription specialists, while rental companies may require a credit card. Insurance with an excess of several thousand kroner is typical, and you pay for charging, tolls (bompenger via AutoPASS) and ferries yourself, usually re-invoiced by the provider.
Business
Companies use subscriptions and monthly rental to cover temporary staff, projects or fleet gaps without long leasing commitments. Benefit-in-kind taxation of company cars available for private use, VAT on cars and the treatment of electric vehicles have changed in recent years and differ between rental and ownership, so ask your accountant or Skatteetaten how the rules apply to your situation.
High taxes on combustion cars, a rapid shift to EVs and uncertainty about battery value make it attractive to let a provider carry depreciation. Subscriptions also bundle insurance and tyre changes in one price.
No. Tolls and ferry charges are registered to the car and passed on to you, often with an administration fee.
Most providers include seasonal tyre changes and storage; check whether studded tyres are offered if you drive in the north or inland.
Excess levels vary by provider, from zero with some rental products to around 6,000–10,000 kr with subscription specialists.
Many providers allow driving in Europe, sometimes with conditions or fees. Check the terms before travelling to Sweden or beyond.
