Car Subscriptions in Greece

Greece has developed a lively market for flexible car use in recent years.

Athens-based Instacar raised significant funding to grow its subscription-style leasing, and the big rental groups have followed with monthly plans of their own: Autohellas (Hertz) with Flex Drive, Avis with Switch, and SIXT with a monthly leasing offer. Most products bundle road tax (τέλη κυκλοφορίας), comprehensive insurance, servicing and roadside assistance into a fixed monthly fee.

The offer is concentrated in Attica and Thessaloniki, with some services in Heraklion and other large cities. Terms range from rolling monthly plans to 12 to 36-month packages, and many require no down payment. With new-car prices and registration costs relatively high, these products have become a practical alternative to buying, especially for younger drivers and small businesses.

Why choose a car subscription in Greece?

Road tax and insurance included

Annual road tax and comprehensive insurance are bundled into the monthly fee, which avoids large once-a-year bills.

No large down payment

Most Greek subscriptions start with the first month's fee plus, at most, a refundable deposit or registration fee.

Avoid registration and resale hassle

You avoid the costs and paperwork of registering a new car and later selling it.

Useful for seasonal needs

Monthly plans suit people who need a car for the summer, for island stays or during a temporary relocation.

Try electric cars

Several providers include electric models, a low-risk way to test an EV as charging networks expand.

Guide

How car subscriptions work in Greece

Providers in Greece usually require a minimum age of 19 to 25, a driving licence held for at least one year, ID and, for longer plans, tax documentation such as a tax return so they can assess eligibility. Payment is normally by card, with some services accepting PayPal. Monthly kilometre allowances commonly range from 1,500 to 2,500 km, and insurance carries an excess. Delivery is available from some providers, while others ask you to collect from a branch.

Things to check before you subscribe

  • Check the monthly kilometre allowance and the charge for extra kilometres.
  • Ask about the insurance excess and whether the deposit is refundable.
  • Confirm notice periods: some providers need 30 days' notice, others only a few days.
  • Check delivery coverage if you live outside Attica or Thessaloniki.
  • Clarify whether quoted prices include VAT.

Business

Car subscriptions for business

Greek companies and freelancers use flexible leasing for staff cars and commercial vehicles, and several providers offer the same plans to professionals. How lease or subscription costs and VAT are treated for business use depends on the vehicle type and how it is used; check with your accountant (λογιστής) before choosing.

Frequently asked questions

Is car subscription available outside Athens?

Yes, but coverage is best in Attica and Thessaloniki. Some providers also serve Heraklion and other cities; check delivery and pick-up points first.

Is road tax included?

In most Greek subscriptions, yes. Road tax, insurance and servicing are usually part of the monthly fee.

Can I cancel at any time?

Rolling plans such as Switch by Avis and Hertz Flex Drive can be ended with short notice. Packages with a fixed term may require 30 days' notice or a minimum period.

Is fuel included?

No. Fuel or electric charging is paid separately by the driver.
