Car Subscriptions in Germany

Germany is one of Europe's most developed car subscription markets.

The Auto-Abo, as it is known locally, bundles the car, insurance, vehicle tax, servicing, tyres and the periodic HU/TÜV inspection into one monthly payment, usually with a chosen mileage package. Providers range from specialists such as FINN and online marketplaces such as FAAREN to rental groups like SIXT and Free2Move, plus EV-focused firms and manufacturer programmes.

The market has also consolidated. Several platforms have rebranded, merged or stopped taking new customers in recent years, so it pays to check that a provider is actively selling before you commit. Typical minimum terms range from one to six months, with most fixed terms between six and 24 months. Prices vary widely depending on the model, term length and mileage, and many providers charge a one-off set-up or delivery fee on top of the monthly rate.

Germany

Why choose a car subscription in Germany?

TÜV and servicing handled

The general inspection (HU), routine maintenance and wear repairs are normally arranged and paid for by the provider, so you are not chasing workshop appointments.

Insurance included

Most Auto-Abo rates include third-party liability plus comprehensive (Vollkasko) cover, which removes the need to shop for a separate policy, though an excess usually applies.

Vehicle tax and registration covered

Kfz-Steuer, registration and deregistration are handled by the provider, so there is no visit to the Zulassungsstelle.

Seasonal tyres sorted

Germany requires winter-suitable tyres in wintry conditions, and many subscriptions include suitable tyres or seasonal tyre changes.

No resale or depreciation risk

You hand the car back at the end of the term, so falling used-car values, particularly for EVs, are the provider's problem rather than yours.

A low-commitment way to try an EV

With the national EV purchase bonus no longer available, a short subscription is a practical way to test whether an electric car suits your charging situation.

Würzburg-based marketplace listing dealer subscriptions from one month

FAAREN is a marketplace rather than a fleet owner: it lists subscription cars from partner dealers and providers. Flexible contracts run from one month up to 36 months, and minimum-term contracts can be cancelled monthly with notice once the minimum has passed. The fixed price typically includes comprehensive insurance, wear-related maintenance, the HU inspection, tax, registration and seasonal tyre changes, though inclusions vary by partner. Mileage allowances depend on the individual listing.

Guide

How car subscriptions work in Germany

You choose a model, term and monthly mileage package online, pass an identity and credit check (often including a SCHUFA query), and then collect the car or have it delivered. Providers set their own minimum age and licence-holding rules, commonly 18 to 23 with at least one year of licence history, and some charge a refundable deposit or one-off set-up fee. Fuel or charging, parking, fines and extra kilometres are not included.

Things to check before you subscribe

  • Check whether the provider is still actively taking new bookings, as the market has seen closures and rebrands.
  • Compare the excess (Selbstbeteiligung) on the included insurance and whether a deposit is held against it.
  • Look at set-up, delivery and collection fees, which can add significantly to short terms.
  • Confirm the cost per extra kilometre and whether you can change your mileage package mid-term.
  • Read the return conditions carefully, as damage assessments at handback are a common source of disputes.

Business

Car subscriptions for business

Many providers offer business subscriptions for sole traders and companies, sometimes with VAT-exclusive pricing and invoices suited to bookkeeping. If an employee also uses the car privately, German company car benefit rules may apply. Ask a tax adviser how a subscription is treated for your business before signing.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Auto-Abo?

It is a car subscription: one monthly payment covers the car plus insurance, tax, servicing and inspections. You only pay separately for fuel or charging and any extras.

How short can a car subscription be in Germany?

Some providers and marketplaces offer one-month terms, while others start at three or six months. Shorter terms usually cost more per month and may carry higher set-up fees.

Is there a credit check?

Yes, most providers run a credit check, often via SCHUFA, before approving a subscription. Requirements differ, so check the provider's eligibility page.

Can I drive abroad?

Many providers allow trips to other European countries, but rules vary. Check the terms for permitted countries and any notification requirements.

What happens at the end of the term?

You return the car, extend, or switch to another model. The car is inspected at handback and you may be charged for damage beyond normal wear or for extra kilometres.
