Car subscriptions in Switzerland
One monthly payment. No long tie-ins. An independent, editorial guide to car subscription and flexible lease providers in Switzerland.
Switzerland is one of Europe's most established car subscription markets.
The Auto-Abo has become a mainstream alternative to leasing, with home-grown specialists such as Carvolution, Carify, Clyde and simpcar competing alongside international rental and leasing groups. A typical plan bundles insurance, servicing, tyres, the motorway vignette and cantonal motor vehicle tax into a single monthly price in Swiss francs.
Providers operate nationwide, though most are based in German-speaking Switzerland around Zurich and Bern; many also serve customers in French-speaking Romandie and Italian-speaking Ticino, and some websites are available in French or Italian. Terms range from one month to four years, with longer commitments bringing lower monthly prices. Because the car is registered in your home canton, prices can vary slightly depending on where you live.
Switzerland
The provider registers the car in your canton of residence and pays the cantonal motor vehicle tax, which varies considerably from canton to canton.
Liability and comprehensive (Vollkasko) insurance and the annual motorway vignette are usually part of the price, removing several separate annual bills.
Seasonal tyre changes, important in alpine regions, and tyre storage are typically included.
Several Swiss providers specialise in EVs, letting you try electric driving without the residual-value risk of buying.
Most Auto-Abos require no down payment, unlike many leases, although some offer a lower monthly rate if you pay one.
Because nearly every running cost is bundled, it is easier to compare total monthly costs against leasing or buying.

Guide
To take out an Auto-Abo you normally need Swiss residence (newcomers need a residence permit to register a car in their name), a category B licence recognised in Switzerland, a positive credit check and often a credit card in your name. Minimum ages typically start at 20 to 23, and some providers require drivers to be 30 or older for high-powered cars. Cars are registered in your home canton, delivered to your door or collected from a hub, and mileage is chosen as a monthly package. Insurance excesses vary by package, and fuel or charging is usually extra.
Business
Swiss companies use car subscriptions for flexible fleets, new staff and project work, and several providers have dedicated business teams. Private use of a company car is generally treated as a taxable benefit in Switzerland, and VAT and expense treatment depend on the company's circumstances and canton. Check with a fiduciary or tax adviser before deciding between an Auto-Abo, leasing or buying for business use.
Typically insurance, servicing and repairs, tyres and tyre changes, cantonal motor vehicle tax, registration and the first motorway vignette. Fuel or electricity is usually extra.
Many providers operate nationwide and register cars in any canton. Check delivery areas and whether contracts and support are available in French or Italian.
Generally yes for private subscriptions, as the car is registered at your Swiss address. Company vehicles can have different rules.
Leasing usually has a lower base rate but you pay insurance, tax, tyres and servicing separately, and it often requires a down payment. An Auto-Abo bundles these and offers shorter terms.
Some providers, such as Carvolution, offer a purchase option after the minimum term. Others do not, so ask before signing.
